So why keep an aquarium?
A well maintained aquarium can provide a stunning focal point in any room or office. I have lost count of the amount of people that have an aquarium and now tell me they spend more time looking at their aquarium than watching television!
Believe it or not, having an aquarium can help you live a healthier lifestyle...honestly!
An aquarium can provide a relaxing escape from the stresses of everyday life.
New research shows that people that watch aquariums can benefit from improved physical and mental wellbeing.
In one of the first Studies of its kind, academics from the university of Plymouth, Exeter University and the National Marine Aquarium studied the mental and physical responses of groups of people who watched aquariums containing different levels of fish.
People had reduced blood pressure and heart rates as a result of watching different types of fish swimming around their under water worlds. Experts also say the longer you watch fish and the more fish you view can also improve your mood.
Watching fish led to "noticeable reductions" in heart rate and blood pressure, the greater the number of fish being viewed also kept peoples attention longer and improved their mood.
I have installed and maintained a number of aquariums in care homes and retirement villages and they are always the focal point for residents.
A great way in getting children interested in the natural world.
When I set up aquariums in shops, it is amazing what an interest children take in them. Caring for an aquarium is a great way of teaching children responsibility, educates them on the importance of animal welfare and the amazing variety of life out there. Its brilliant that children are still so engaged with fish and the possibilities that come with an aquarium. There are now a huge range of small aquariums to suit almost any room of the house or accommodate even the smallest budget.
